FanTaaStic: FUSECO Playground and OneLab

FanTaaStic is a project of EIT ICT Labs, the mission of which is to drive European leadership in ICT innovation for economic growth and quality of life. The handshake between EIT ICT Labs and DG Connect focuses on taking selected test beds to market, opening them up to new user segments, especially small businesses (startups and SMEs) for product development and validation.

FanTaaStic is aimed at rolling out an experimental facility, brokering across multiple distributed and tested infrastructures. It is exploring the business potential for a Testbed as a Service, based on a business and operational plan already defined and a pilot phase, breaking new ground in test bed sustainability.

Current testbeds

FUSECO Playground: The FUSECO Playground offers a unique open infrastructure testbed to prototype and validate in an integrated multi-access network environment (DSL/WLAN/2G/3G/LTE/LTE-A) new concepts, components, protocols and helps to coin your vision of a Future Internet in areas like Smart Cities, Automotive, eHealth, eGovernment, Smart Metering and more. The FUSECO Playground is a 3GPP Evolved Packet Core (EPC) centric, independent and open laboratory for mobile broadband communication research and development. It addresses large- and small-scale equipment vendors, network operators, application developers and research groups to testwise deploy and extend their components and applications before market introduction in order to manifest their advance in the international telecom market.

OneLab - One Access to worldwide labs on Future Networks: OneLab is a federation of testbeds offering a simple access environment rich in resources. It makes it easier for researchers and innovators to deliver standardised and mature innovations.

Testbeds: PlanetLab Europe. NITOS. w.lab-t. FUSECO Playground. CortexLab.

Opportunities: OneLab welcomes experimenters to develop safely and reliably next-generation services and applications for the backbone of tomorrow’s society.

Services

- Transparent access to diverse experimental resources through a single access point. Experimenters can browse, select and reserve test resources from various sites and match the testbeds with the area you of your investigation on future networks.
- Global-scale experimentation resources and skills. You can run experiments in multiple environments to benchmark, compare, evaluate sensitivity, check robustness, or conduct interoperability or integration tests when protocols, mechanisms, methods and algorithms are added to complete large-scale systems.
- Step-by-step support of the testbed. OneLab also provides live and online tutorials, and invites you to join and share with the experimenter community.
- OneLab provides reference data for your experiment and stores your experiment data in a standardised format for further analysis and studies.
- OneLab provides you with a range of tools to control your experiment and maximise your gain from experiment results.

Technologies

- Environments for testing software in ad hoc communication between wireless nodes and fixed and mobile nodes; isolated and normal radio interference conditions; light and sound sensors.

- Environments for testing software in wireless and wired broadband communications: LTE, IMS, OpenEPC, OpenMTC. Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) and Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) to test applications.

- Environments of and for devices for testing communications in a controlled environment. Widely distributed Internet at scale to test software in peer-to-peer or overlay networks. Measurements of the Internet. Evaluation environment of network characteristics with high-speed switches.

How to get involved: People affiliated with a research institution can join as a member contributor. People working for SMEs can contact OneLab for support and a quote. People working for a large corporation can contact OneLab for the best collaboration plan.  Email OneLab

OneLab uses open specifications that are widely adopted across the FIRE initiative, as well as in the GENI initiative in the U.S. and other initiatives worldwide, such as Australia, Brazil, China, and Japan.

OneLab has benefitted from funding from various national and European research programmes, including the European Commission (OneLab2, OpenLab and Fed4FIRE); EIT ICT Labs (FITTING); ANR-VERSO (F-Lab) and ANR-Equipex (FIT).
